Eyeglass and Contact Lens Prescription Release Protocol
The Practices and 20/20NOW have implemented the procedures listed in this document to comply with the Eyeglass Rule and the Contact Lens Rule. 20/20NOW provides 2 ways for patients to receive copies of their eyeglass and/or contact lens prescriptions.
- Digital prescriptions
- Paper prescriptions
Digital Prescriptions Portal and Email
During medical intake, the patient has the option to provide their email address and electronically sign an authorization to enable access to an electronic copy of their prescription.
The Remote Doctor will sign the Rx and the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) prints a courtesy copy of the prescription.
Printed Paper Prescriptions
If the patient declines in the initial medical intake to agree to receive their prescription in digital format and/or does not provide a contact email, the PCC must:
Obtain patients electronic prescription receipt confirmation by clicking on the print button to print a copy of the patient’s prescription.
A pop up will appear for the patient to sign. Onsite PCC must ask Patient to sign the electronic signature on the prescription receipt confirmation each time the patient receives a prescription from the Practice.
A copy of each prescription receipt confirmation signature is kept for 3 years.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Exam Not Completed: If the eye and or contact lens exam is not completed, the Doctor will not finalize the contact lens prescription, and therefore the patient will not see this prescription in their online patient profile.
Refusal to sign Rx Receipt confirmation: If patient refuses to sign the prescription receipt confirmation, the PCC must note the patient’s refusal in the Note Section of the EMR.
Email Contact Change: A patient may change their email address on record or revoke their authorization to receive digital copies of their prescription at any time by contacting the Medical Records Team exam at:
https://for2020now.com/about-us/
After completion and submission of the Email change/add request, a 20/20NOW Medical Records team member will reach out the person to verify patient name, DOB, Address prior to any change or addition to email on file.
Onsite patient care coordinators must not change patient email addresses in the EHR, even upon request of the patient.
